HIS ANKLE throbbed in the morning. Easing his legs over the side of the bed, Jared sat in a forlorn curl, weight pitched forward, ready to pull his tired body to the floor. Across the room, Fin formed a lump under his covers. He’d come up late. Gut swirling unpleasantly, Jared allowed himself to wonder why. Had he hooked up with blondie? It shouldn’t bother him if Fin had found some fun and companionship. Given Jared’s behavior the night before, could he blame him? No.

Jared hadn’t inquired about a ride back to Easton, either. He was torn. Half of him wanted to continue the hike. Two more days, and he’d be done. A four-hour ride in a van would reunite him with his anonymous car, and he could slip into the stream of traffic flowing south down the turnpike and disappear into his….

Before he could name his life miserable, Jared dug his fingers into his hair and pressed on his temples until a dull throb entered his brain. What was wrong with him? Actually, that was a stupid question. He knew what was wrong. Same thing had been wrong with him all his life. He didn’t really get people, and so he avoided them. The fact he didn’t seem to get himself only made matters worse. How had he even managed one proper relationship?

Fin stirred and rolled over. Even in the dim morning light, his blue eyes shone with warmth. “Morning.”

His cheerful greeting prompted a half smile. “Morning,” Jared said. He pulled in a quick breath. “Listen, about last night—”

Fin extracted a hand from his blanket and waved it. “I know. It’s all right. I was an ass for about six months after Tom died.”

“Brian didn’t die.”

“But he broke your heart.”

Jared’s throat tried to close. He managed a whisper. “Yes.” He breathed in again. “I didn’t even know I had one until he left. I didn’t know I could….” Feel, despite the fact he often felt as he did now. Broken, not quite right. “If you want to partner with blondie, it’s cool. I’d understand.”

“His name is Simon.”

An irrational bolt of jealousy skewered his gut.

“And he’s still not my type.”

“I’m not anyone’s type.”

“I live for a good challenge.”

“I don’t understand you.”

Fin offered a sleepy grin. “No, but you like me. You told me so yesterday.”

“You know, but for the ache in every goddamned part of my body, I’m not feeling so forty-five right now.”

“Doing sixteen and awkward?” Fin lightened his tone. “You like me. I like you too. We should go out sometime.”

“Guys never sound like that.”

“So, apparently we’ve turned into sixteen-year-old girls in our old age.”

“We’re not old.”

“That’s what I keep trying to tell you.”

Jared couldn’t help but smile. “Allentown is less than an hour from Valley Forge.”

“Glad you’re thinking ahead.”

“I’m not much of a friend.”

“Oh, but you could be if you gave yourself a chance.”
